According to reports from the time, the sheikh threatened that the Kuwaiti team would leave the field if the goal was not cancelled.
Incredibly, referee Stupar changed his decision and disallowed the French goal, even though there was no legitimate reason under the rules of the game to do so. French players were outraged, while commentators and fans around the world watched in disbelief. The match eventually ended 4-1 after France scored another goal shortly afterward.
The controversy did not end there. FIFA later punished both the referee and the Kuwaiti football official. Sheikh Fahad received a fine, while referee Stupar was heavily sanctioned and never officiated at another World Cup.
