What to Do When Your Teen Has No Idea What They Want to Do After School

Don't know what to do after you finish school? Read this. — Kate Gladdin • Teen Resilience Expert • Youth Motivational Speaker

If your teenager is approaching the end of school and shrugs every time you ask about their plans, take a breath. You are far from alone. Plenty of young people finish Year 12 without a clear picture of what comes next, and that is completely normal. The pressure to have it all figured out at 17 or 18 is enormous, but it rarely matches reality.

The good news is that uncertainty is not a dead end. With the right approach, it can become a useful starting point. Many families find that practical school leaver employment support helps turn vague worry into real steps, giving teens the guidance, confidence and exposure to work they need to make informed choices without feeling rushed.

Here is how you can help your teen move forward.

    Start by Listening, Not Fixing

When a teen says “I don’t know,” it often means “I’m overwhelmed” or “I’m scared of choosing wrong.” Before offering solutions, create space for an honest conversation. Ask open questions like:

    • What did you enjoy most at school, and what did you dread?
    • When do you lose track of time?
    • What would a good day at work look like for you?

Avoid the temptation to steer them toward what you think is best. Your role right now is to be a sounding board, not a career adviser handing down a verdict. Teens open up when they feel heard rather than judged.

Remind Them That Nobody Has It All Figured Out

Many adults changed careers several times, and some still aren’t sure what they want to be. Share your own story, including the detours and the things that didn’t work out. Hearing that a career path is rarely a straight line can take an enormous weight off your teen’s shoulders.

It also helps to shift the question. Instead of “What do you want to do for the rest of your life?”, try “What would you like to try first?” The first step doesn’t need to be the final destination.

    Explore Interests and Strengths

Your teen may not know what they want, but they almost certainly have interests and strengths worth exploring. Encourage them to think about:

    • Skills they already have: communication, creativity, problem solving, being reliable, working with animals or technology.
    • Hobbies and passions: gaming, sport, art, cooking and volunteering can all point toward real career areas.
    • Values: do they want to help people, work outdoors, build things, or earn a certain income?

Free online career quizzes, school career advisers and local youth services can all help them see patterns they might miss on their own. The goal isn’t to get a perfect answer but to generate ideas worth testing.

    Get Them Some Real-World Exposure

Nothing clarifies career direction like experience. Reading about a job is very different from seeing it up close. Encourage your teen to:

    • Take on casual or part-time work, even if it’s unrelated to their long-term goals.
    • Try work experience, job shadowing or short volunteering stints.
    • Chat with people in different industries, such as relatives, neighbours or family friends.
    • Attend careers expos, open days and information sessions.

Every experience teaches them something, even if it’s simply what they don’t want to do. Ruling things out is genuine progress.

    Look at All the Pathways

University is not the only route, and it’s worth making sure your teen knows it. Options include:

    • Apprenticeships and traineeships, which combine paid work with training.
    • TAFE and vocational courses, which build practical, job-ready skills.
    • Entry-level jobs, which can lead to progression and further study.
    • A gap period, used deliberately for work, travel or volunteering.

There are many ways to build a rewarding career, and plenty of people switch between these pathways over time. Encourage your teen to see their options as flexible rather than permanent.

    Build Practical Job-Ready Skills

While your teen works out their direction, they can still prepare for the working world. Help them build the basics that employers value in almost any field:

    • Writing a simple resume and cover letter
    • Practising interview questions
    • Learning how to present professionally and communicate clearly
    • Understanding workplace expectations like punctuality and teamwork

These skills build confidence, and confidence makes taking the next step feel far less daunting. If your teen struggles to get started on their own, structured programs and mentoring can make a real difference.

    Manage Your Own Worry

It’s natural to feel anxious when your teen seems directionless, especially when their friends appear to have it all sorted. Try not to compare, and try not to let your worry become theirs. Teens pick up on stress quickly, and pressure often leads to avoidance rather than action.

Set gentle, realistic goals together, such as “This month, let’s look into two options” rather than “You need a plan by Friday.” Celebrate small wins, like updating a resume or attending a taster session. Progress builds momentum.

Know When to Seek Extra Help

If your teen seems persistently anxious, withdrawn or unmotivated, or if they’ve been stuck for a long time, extra support can help. This might come from a school counsellor, a youth worker, a GP or a dedicated employment program. Asking for help isn’t a sign of failure. It’s a practical way to give your teen the tools and encouragement they need.

    Final Thoughts

Not knowing what comes next is one of the most common experiences for young people leaving school. Instead of demanding answers, focus on curiosity, experience and small steps. Listen, explore options together, encourage real-world experiences and reassure your teen that direction often becomes clearer through doing.
