The Wrestlers careers of Belen’s Josh Jaramillo and Tommy Freeman, along with Los Lunas’ James Bachicha, are set to continue at the collegiate level. Each athlete recently signed to compete for universities within the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, marking an exciting step in their athletic journeys. Notably, Freeman and Bachicha, who were once rivals, will now join forces as teammates.

Jaramillo’s Commitment to Colorado State University-Pueblo

Josh Jaramillo, a three-time state runner-up, will continue his wrestling career at Colorado State University-Pueblo. He expressed excitement over the opportunity, emphasizing the significance of receiving a scholarship to cover his college expenses. Jaramillo, who will wrestle at 125 pounds, has ambitious goals for his collegiate career.

“I’m not just looking to be part of the team,” said Jaramillo, who plans to pursue a degree in health science. “I want to be an All-American. I want to be a national champion. I want to leave a lasting impact on the program.”

Freeman’s Path to New Mexico Highlands University

Tommy Freeman, who recently placed fourth at the 4A state championships, will join New Mexico Highlands University. He will study criminology while continuing to wrestle at the collegiate level. Freeman expressed gratitude for the support he received throughout the recruiting process from his Belen High School coaches.

“It’s nice not spending a lot of money and still getting the opportunity to wrestle,” Freeman said. “The BHS coaches were extremely helpful, guiding me through the process and offering advice.”

Bachicha Joins Freeman at New Mexico Highlands University

James Bachicha, the 2025 5A state champion at 160 pounds, will also attend New Mexico Highlands University. He’ll be joining Freeman as a fellow student-athlete on the Cowboys’ wrestling team. Initially uncertain about continuing his wrestling career after his state title win, Bachicha found new motivation during a visit to the university.

“I wasn’t sure if I wanted to wrestle anymore after winning state, but after visiting the campus and meeting the coach, I knew this was the place for me,” Bachicha explained.

Bachicha plans to major in physical therapy at NMHU, following in the footsteps of his Los Lunas High School coach, Steve Chavez, who is an alumnus of the university.
