Honoring Brian Wilson With countless iconic hits like “Surfin’ Safari,” “Good Vibrations,” “In My Room,” and “God Only Knows,” it’s clear why he chose this particular song. Its blend of hopeful longing perfectly captures the spirit of Wilson’s work. As someone who remained forever youthful, Wilson deeply connected with the song’s desire for a brighter future in “Wouldn’t It Be Nice?”

A musical visionary who transcended the surf rock roots of the Beach Boys, Wilson passed away on Wednesday, June 11, at the age of 82.

    Let’s go surfin’ now

Born on June 20, 1942, Wilson grew up in Hawthorne with a passion for music. At 16, he formed a band with his younger brothers Carl and Dennis, cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine in the Wilsons’ garage.

Their first single, “Surfin’,” released in 1961, was inspired by Dennis Wilson’s love of surfing. The following year, Wilson—just 19 or 20—unofficially produced their debut album, Surfin’ Safari.

Throughout the early ’60s, the Beach Boys captured the California Dream with hits like “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “Little Deuce Coupe,” and “California Girls,” celebrating beaches, surfboards, fast cars, and teen romance.

Many of these songs remained lifelong favorites for Wilson. In a 2012 interview before the Beach Boys’ 50th anniversary tour, he highlighted early ballads like “Surfer Girl” and “Warmth of the Sun” as personal favorites.

Even then, Wilson’s work showed musical sophistication beyond typical Top 40 hits, earning praise from fellow musicians after his passing. Micky Dolenz of the Monkees called him “a musical and spiritual giant” whose melodies shaped generations. Randy Bachman of Bachman-Turner Overdrive described the Beach Boys as “the American answer to the Beatles,” applauding their songcraft and harmonies.

Wilson wrote most of their hits, often with lyrics by Mike Love. However, conflicts grew as their controlling father, Murry Wilson, clashed with Brian’s evolving, ambitious musical vision beyond simple pop.

    ‘Teenage symphony to God’

Wilson gradually left touring to focus on studio work, but as his LSD use increased and mental health issues—later diagnosed as schizoaffective and bipolar disorders—emerged, his behavior became unpredictable.

Despite struggles, he created masterpieces like Pet Sounds, hailed as one of the greatest albums ever, and the ambitious but unfinished Smile, which he completed and released in 2004.

Though Pet Sounds wasn’t an immediate hit, it became a landmark, inspiring artists like the Beatles to push creative boundaries with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Musician Sean Ono Lennon expressed deep sorrow at Wilson’s passing, calling him a major influence and recalling his kindness and generosity.
“He was our American Mozart,” Lennon added, “a one-of-a-kind genius from another world.”

John Cale of the Velvet Underground also paid tribute on X, praising Wilson’s groundbreaking talent beyond surf music.

“To me, Brian Wilson wasn’t just about surf music,” Cale wrote. “He was a true musical genius, transforming pop into stunning sophistication. He will be deeply missed.”

    Darkness and light

The darker chapters of Wilson’s life, including the ’80s when his psychologist Eugene Landy controlled him almost entirely, remained mostly hidden until Wilson regained his independence and reemerged publicly in the late ’80s.

Though hesitant, Wilson eventually spoke about those times. In a 2015 interview about Love & Mercy, he admitted, “I was anxious at first, but then I got over it real quick. I’m happy to see the movie unfold.”

A survivor despite lingering trauma, Wilson’s live performances stayed musically sharp, even as his voice showed age. Backed by the Wondermints since 1999, his band faithfully recreated the complex sounds from his classic recordings.

Wilson met Melinda Ledbetter in 1986 at a Cadillac showroom, where she helped free him from Landy’s control. Though their relationship faced challenges due to Landy’s interference, they married in 1995.

Ledbetter’s death in January 2024 left Wilson devastated. On Instagram, he wrote, “My heart is broken. Melinda, my beloved wife of 28 years, passed away this morning. Our five children and I are lost. She was my savior, my anchor, and everything to us.”

    Love and mercy to you

Ledbetter played a key role in bringing Love & Mercy to life, collaborating with screenwriter Oren Moverman to share stories Wilson couldn’t tell himself.

During our 2015 interview about the film, actor John Cusack—who portrayed Wilson in the ’80s and ’90s scenes—joined us. (Paul Dano played Wilson in the ’60s, and Elizabeth Banks portrayed Ledbetter.)

Cusack reflected on embodying Wilson’s creative spirit: “It’s rare to imagine yourself in the shoes of someone who’s made some of the most healing, loving music we’ve ever heard.”

He gently guided Wilson through the interview, asking about reliving tough moments with Landy, portrayed by Paul Giamatti. Wilson admitted, “The doctor periods were rough because I was, like, not a sissy, but I was a scared little guy in those days.”

Similarly, Mike Love supported Wilson during discussions of their 50th anniversary tour. When Wilson began singing the new song “That’s Why God Made the Radio,” Love confirmed, “Yeah, that one.”

“It’s a beautiful song,” Love said—a sentiment true of much of Wilson’s work.

Wilson recalled writing the track as the opener of his 1988 self-titled album, created before he found stability with Ledbetter. “I was sitting at my piano, had half a bottle of champagne, and the song came together in 20 minutes,” he said.

The song’s message? “It’s about loneliness—people who feel lonesome. I try to bring that out with my voice,” Wilson explained.

Its verses reveal Wilson’s own experience: “I was lyin’ in my room and the news came on TV / A lotta people out there hurtin’ and it really scares me.”

But the chorus offers comfort: “Love and mercy, that’s what you need tonight / So love and mercy to you and your friends tonight.”

Tonight and always, love and mercy to Brian Wilson, his family, friends, and devoted fans.
