Mickey Dianne Gallivan, a cherished community leader, lifelong public servant, and passionate preservationist, passed away peacefully at her home in Pomona, California. Her life was a testament to the power of compassion, civic dedication, and a deep reverence for history.

    Early Life and Education

Born April 11, 1945, in Yazoo City, Mississippi, Mickey was the daughter of Mildred Irene Cain and Roy Edwin Saffel. She shared her childhood with siblings Roy Edwin Jr., Kaye, and Mike. Her educational journey began in a small two-room schoolhouse in Valley, Mississippi, and continued through various towns in Texas and New Mexico.

Mickey graduated from Lovington High School in 1963 and earned a mathematics degree from New Mexico State University in 1967. Her passion for helping others led her to pursue graduate studies, including a Master of Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling from Cal State Fullerton, a Certificate in Child Welfare Management from UCLA, and a Master of Social Work from Cal State San Bernardino.

A Lifelong Partnership and Family Devotion

While attending college, Mickey met and married fellow student James Ray Gallivan in 1964. Together, they built a strong, loving family, raising four daughters: Michele, Cheley, Britney, and Danielle. Mickey also embraced her role as a grandmother to eight grandchildren, sharing her warmth and wisdom with each of them.

    Professional Career in Social Work

Mickey began her career as a social worker for the New Mexico Health and Social Services Department. In 1972, after relocating to Pomona, she continued her work with the San Bernardino County Department of Social Services. Over the years, she rose through the ranks, eventually serving as deputy director for the Department of Aging and Adult Services. Her work included shaping policy, drafting impactful legislation, and launching vital services for vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly and victims of domestic violence.

She was instrumental in founding the House of Ruth and played a major role in developing long-term care initiatives at local and state levels. Mickey helped design Cal State San Bernardino’s Master of Social Work program and championed laws protecting elder and dependent adults.

    Preserving Pomona’s History

After retirement, Mickey’s focus turned to historical preservation. She served 19 years as president of the Historical Society of Pomona Valley (HSPV) and 28 years on its board. Her leadership led to the protection and recognition of numerous historic sites, including Casa Primera, Adobe de Palomares, and the Pomona City Stables, which earned a National Historic Landmark status under her guidance.

She founded the Pomona Museum of History and acquired the Pomona Ebell Building, establishing the Pomona Ebell Museum of History. Mickey also preserved the Currier Ranch House and Fox Theater, and helped create historic districts such as Lincoln Park and Wilton Heights.

Her authorship of Early Pomona showcased her dedication to educating the public, and her imaginative programming—like haunted mansion tours and murder mystery dinners—drew new generations into the world of historical appreciation.

    Broad Civic Involvement

Mickey served Pomona in many capacities. As a longtime member of Pomona Heritage and the Cultural Arts Commission, she initiated cultural events like the Chalk Walk and brought the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Opera, and Symphonic Orchestra to the city. She also served on the Pomona Library Board of Trustees, the Budget Oversight Committee, and the Ethics Commission.

She chaired the Miss Pomona Pageant, transforming it into a scholarship program, and was a key figure in the LA County Fair Community Committee, helping implement children’s programs and install a historical marker honoring Japanese Americans interned during WWII.

    Honors and Recognition

Mickey’s contributions were widely recognized. In 2008, Congresswoman Grace Napolitano named her Woman Hero of the Year. In 2012, she was named LA County Fair Community Hero. In 2022, the Historical Society dedicated its new garden, Mickey’s Place, in her honor. Her story will soon be commemorated in the Hall of Gratitude tile installation at the Pomona-North A Line Train Station.

    Unyielding Spirit and Lasting Legacy

Even while battling cancer, Mickey continued to pursue life fully, taking up fencing and competing in national tournaments. Her home, a 101-year-old historic gem, became a gathering place for community events and a reflection of her passion for restoration and hospitality.
